  1. this book was interesting. the storyline was cute, but it jumped around a little too much for my liking.

  2. This one is still rolling around in my head. The different story lines, each very unforgettable, somehow work together to make a unique and true-feeling book that still haunts me.

  3. This book is definitely not what I expected it to be. I loved all the different stories and how they actually ended up going together. The characters were great and reading this book was like nothing I’ve ever read before. I think this book has a shot at the Newbery.

  4. My beginning impression of the book was that I was confused by the multiple story lines, and sad from other stuff that I won’t spoil for you.
My ending impression was that it was a sad story, with a nice ending that made me cry (which is a rather difficult thing to do, the only other book that has made me cry was Where The Red Fern Grows) and I think it will win the Newberry.

  5. This book was really wonderful. I had no idea that it would contain two storylines, and that it had some things from mythology in it. I really loved how the writing style was in many ways casual, but very moving and expressive. The ending, while relatively happy was bittersweet and not the “skip off to pick daisies and everybody lives happily ever after” type. This is certaintly in my top three. I think it has an incredibly high chance of winning the Newbery.

  6. This book was definitaly a surprise to me. A wonderful story of love, hate, and revenge. Everyone should definitely read this book. Great plot, I loved that it had two storyllines and that one of them was a flashback. It was suspenseful and kept me reading.

  7. During our First Top 3 Vote this year, the following comments were made about this book:
“The overall way of telling the story is beautiful and poetic. Definitely unforgettable.”
“It made me cry. This story is told in a unique, almost poetic way.”
“It made me feel as if I were there, very emotional about the characters, and the two intertwined stories came together well.”
“The writing hooked me from the very first page…”
“There is still hope even when it seems like all is lost. It had a lasting impact on me. The characters were so loving and hopeful and they were strong. I also loved the ending…”
“The writing style was really casual, but very moving. I really enjoyed the two separate plot lines and how they were so very different from each other but interwoven…”

  8. I liked the overall theme, language, and Bayou country atmosphere created in this book, but there was way too much foreshadowing/foreboding/”if they only knew” type stuff throughout the book for me. I also agree that it jumped around a bit too much. So although it has some good qualities, this is not one of my favorites this year.

  9. This is my all time favorite book. I liked how it jumped around to different characters. All of the stories were very touching. This book made me cry without making me hate the book which was very surprising since ussually i get to a sad part wish it didn’t happen and stop reading the book, but htis one made me read on.
