Shipwreck Island, by S. A. Bodeen

Shipwreck islandSummary:  Sarah Robinson is deeply troubled in the wake of her dad’s second marriage. She now has to deal with a new stepmom and two stepbrothers.   Sarah’s dad and stepmom then decide to take the whole family on a special vacation in order to break the ice and have everyone get to know one another. They’ll fly to Tahiti, charter a boat, and go sailing for a few days.  But it does not go as planned.

  1. This book is about a girl, Sarah, whose father gets remarried after her mom dies. Sarah’s new mother, Yvonna, has two sons, Marco and Nacho. The entire family goes on a honeymoon to Fiji after the wedding and they take what they believe is a luxury cruise but what is actually just a rickety old sailboat with an elderly captain and Newfoundland dog called Ahab as first mate. The boat crashes on a mysterious island during a storm, and Sarah, Marco, and Nacho continue to find kangaroos, birds with teeth instead of beaks, and oak trees on the island. I personally found the addition of those animals and trees on a tropical Fijian island to be a bit too crazy.
    This book is clearly going to be in a series, because none of the many problems in the book are resolved by the end. The family is still stranded on the island, Yvonna is still ill, and there is still a sense of doom on the island. So, because of how this book doesn’t stand alone, I vote no for Newbery.
