Almost Home, by Joan Bauer

Summary:  When twelve-year-old Sugar’s grandfather dies and her gambling father takes off yet again, Sugar and her mother lose their home in Missouri. They head to Chicago for a fresh start, only to discover that fresh starts aren’t so easy to come by for the homeless. With the help of a rescue dog, Shush; a foster family; a supportive teacher; a love of poetry; and her own grace and good humor, Sugar comes to understand that while she can’t control the hand life deals her, she can control how she responds.

  1. This was a great book with lots of feeling. It is one of the best books i have read on this topic. Now, i can say that One for the Murpheys is not in my top 7 (i was having a hard time deciding) because of this book. I connected with the characters in both books, but i liked the character better in this one, she seemed more positive always looking on the bright side of things even if it wasn’t so bright. This has a chance at the newbery.
