Five Lives of our Cat Zook, by Joanne Rocklin

Summary:  Oona and her brother, Fred, love their cat Zook (short for Zucchini), but Zook is sick. As they conspire to break him out of the vet’s office, convinced he can only get better at home with them, Oona tells Fred the story of Zook’s previous lives, ranging in style from fairy tale to grand epic to slice of life. Each of Zook’s lives has echoes in Oona’s own family life, which is going through a transition she’s not yet ready to face.

  1. I loved this, it is one of the best books i have read. The best part was plot. I liked how it went into each one of is 5 “previous lives” which weren’t really lives they were just lies that Oona was telling to make her little brother not feel so sad about their cat being at the vet. I connected to the character and i seemed to feel what they were feeling. I think that the ending was one of the best endings i have read.

  2. First thing I have to say, this is for kids around 8-10 years old. I can see maybe why a 8 year old might like this book, it’s about a cat, but I really don’t see any Newbery qualities, it’s more for like a ‘good’ read for younger kids, so I vote it no for Newbery.
