One for the Murphys, by Lynda Hunt

Summary:  Carley uses humor and street smarts to keep her emotional walls high and thick. But the day she becomes a foster child, and moves in with the Murphys, she’s blindsided. This loving, bustling family shows Carley the stable family life she never thought existed, and she feels like an alien in their cookie-cutter-perfect household. Despite her resistance, the Murphys eventually show her what it feels like to belong–until her mother wants her back and Carley has to decide where and how to live. She’s not really a Murphy, but the gifts they’ve given her have opened up a new future.

  1. This is a great book!!! You could really, really, really connect with the main character. When she has to make the choice between the two families at the end and she is struggling to make the decision, it seems like you are really there. The ending was very good too. I will not give the ending away though.

  2. I liked this book quite a bit. It was filled with emotion, really making you feel for the character. The split between the two families is really intense. There are some aspects of the plot that may be too much for younger kids (I don’t want to spoil anything, though), but I’m pretty sure this book will earn a spot on my Newbery list.

  3. I agree. I didn’t like the ending, though. It was very emotional, which is good, but I thought she made the wrong choice.
