A coming of age story of a girl whose life is turned upside down when her father loses his job. Sonia, who is half-Indian, half-Jewish must leave the comfort of her much loved open-minded private school, the Community. Sonia is confronted for the first time with defining her ethnicity. When she notices at the new school, kids are self segregated by skin color at the lunch tables, she wonders to her parents, what am I black or white? She explores new identities and struggles to choose between two groups of friends. As her father’s depression deepens, Sonia is forced to re-examine her definition of family and where her loyalties lie.

I really enjoyed this. A great story, especially for anyone who has ever had to switch schools.The author tackled some pretty ambitious topics; depression, race relations, religious identity and job loss to name a few. Hiranandani offers up a new twist to the familiar story of cliques in middle school. Good,fast read. 3.5/5 stars!
I enjoyed reading this book and i think it has a good story line, but i could not conect with the main character. She changed around a lot with liking something and then not liking the same thing until you were pretty confused about how she felt. i have read a couple books similar to this book, but i still think it has a chance at the Newbery.
I think most people can relate to this book, and the main character was developed pretty well. I don’t know if it would be for Newbery, but I enjoyed it a lot.
I overall didn’t like the book, I couldn’t really relate to the main character, and I didn’t feel like I actually ‘knew’ her. I don’t think it has a chance at newbery.
