This is definitely the strangest book I've read so far in this club. The characters...I felt like I didn't know anything about them. The author didn't describe why Agatha Black was so horrible. I thought that when Henri started to turn into an insect, that should have been more dramatic. The plot was strange, yet interesting. The setting: time passed very quickly and it got confusing. I say no for Newbery.

This plot is done and re-done so many times. Usually authors try to put their own twist on the book but I feel like I have read other books almost identical to this one: its the depression, she lives with her mother, her father left, they are poor, her mother is depressed, they are trying to keep the house, she struggles to keep her friend who is moving away, a class bully-nothing new. Sometimes the main character seemed too perfect, sometimes too snotty, sometimes too humble, though I could connect with her at moments when she was caring for her mother. I did like at the end though, how everything turns out in a funny perfect kind of way. I would reccomend this to fifth through seventh graders who like books in this time period, but it is not the newbery.

This was the average book. I connected to the parts where Chia's sister was involved, and I connected to the parts where Chia was working on her promise to God, but other than those parts I did not like this book. The main charcater was not too flat, she was just so average and pretty much constantly thinking about the same things- boys, disturbing thoughts about breast cancer, and how annoying her sister was, (in that order.) This is not the newbery.

I did not read the other books before this and this book still made perfect sense. I have never read a book like this especially with a setting like this. The setting was definitely the best part and the part that made this story interesting. I also liked how the author made you see how Moose's sister was really like and what they went thorugh to live with her, but still made her likeable and at some parts, able to connect with. Also, the mystery in this book was a unique one that made sense. Altogether, this book is a good one and a fun read, but not my favorite so far.

I really liked this book. The writing style fit the story so perfectly. It created a semi-depressing, partly mysterious, somethings wrong kind of mood. The setting is well described and unique also fitting the story perfectly. The plot is hard to explain, but basically there is this one student at the boarding school who feels guilty about a certain "incident' (we don't know what it is yet) that happened last year at the school. He is trying to forget about it but then he finds some CDs in his room that a student involved in that 'incident' left him containing that student telling his story. Throughout the book he starts understanding more about that student's story and meanwhile his own story starts unfolding and the readers start figuring out more about last year. Tied into all this, is a paper that the students have to write called the Tragedy Paper. That paper kind of puts this whole book together.
I really liked the plot and I loved how the one students story is getting told through recorded CDs, it is such a good idea. The only thing I didn't think was great was sometimes the two chatacters' stories were too similar and I had a hard time seperating them other than that, I think that this book could win the newbery.
