A lot of folks really like this book and compare it to the Nancy Drew books, which I love. But I’m a little skeptical about it. The voice didn’t really sound like a teen girl to me, and all of the characters seemed sort of two-dimensional. Although it was an interesting enough read as a mystery, there was nothing about it that really sang out “award winner” to me.

I really liked this book. I thought it was well written with a clever plot and very well-developed characters. The plot had a few gaping holes in it, like why the man characters were asked to find the jewel, but overall the clues were very well done. There are so many mysteries that don’t give you enough information to actually solve the mystery, but this boo gave you more than enough information to find the jewel and figure out who the villain is.
So overall, this book is a fun adventure book. It’s no Agatha Christie, but it’s fun and enjoyable. I would recommend it to anyone, but I’m not sure if it’s Newbery or not.
